Standby Mode stops working while you drive

In early March 2026, Starlink reclassified Standby Mode as a stationary option. Drivers who had kept a paused dish online at low speed started seeing 'Starlink Disabled while moving', and Starlink's help pages now say Standby is not intended for in-motion use.

Before and after card. Before: Standby Mode gave low-speed data up to 500 Kbps, even while driving. After March 2026: the app shows Disabled while moving; Standby works only when parked.

What changed

RV Mobile Internet reported on March 6, 2026 that Starlink changed its in-motion policy. Along with a new 100 mph speed limit for Roam and Priority plans (covered in its own article), Starlink recategorized Standby Mode from something that worked on the road to a stationary option.

Drive Tesla Canada followed on March 9, 2026, reporting that users on Standby were seeing a new message in the Starlink app:

“Starlink Disabled while moving”

and that Starlink’s support documents had been updated to say:

“Pausing your service with Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use.”

That line is still on Starlink’s in-motion help page and its page on pausing service.

At the time, Standby cost $5 a month and gave unlimited data at up to 500 Kbps. Some travelers used it as a cheap way to keep messaging, maps and low-quality audio working while driving.

Who is affected

  • Van-lifers and RVers who kept the dish paused on Standby while on the road for messages, navigation or streaming audio.
  • Overlanders who used Standby as a low-cost “always on” link between camps.
  • Not affected: anyone on a Roam plan. Roam plans still support use while moving, up to 100 mph where allowed.

What it means for you

Standby is now a parked-only plan. If you need any service while the rig is moving, you need an active Roam plan for that time. The cheapest is Roam 100GB.

What you can do now:

  1. Decide how much driving time needs internet. For many travelers, a phone’s cellular data covers the drive and the dish only matters at camp. That keeps Standby useful.
  2. If you need it on the move, switch to a Roam plan for travel days. Starlink lets you change Roam plans any time, and a mid-cycle upgrade gives you the full allowance of the new plan.
  3. If you see the message, our in-motion messages page explains “Disabled while moving” versus “Moving too fast.”
  4. Re-check your plan math. Our plan picker weighs pausing against keeping a plan active, now that Standby can’t cover driving days.

What stays the same

  • Standby still gives low-speed data while parked, for messages and updates.
  • Roam plans keep in-motion support, as before.
  • Residential plans still don’t allow in-motion use at all.

What changed since

Standby’s price doubled to $10 a month from May 16, 2026 for new customers (June 18 for existing customers’ bills), per press reports. We covered that separately.

Today’s values (from our checked data, not from the date above): Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use (checked Oct 5, 2026) · “DISABLED WHILE MOVING”: your plan only allows service while the dish is stationary; in-motion needs Roam (checked Oct 5, 2026) · $55/mo (checked Oct 5, 2026).

What we don’t know yet

  • Whether Standby works at very low speeds. RV Mobile Internet mentioned unconfirmed reports that it may still work under about 10 mph.
  • The exact day the block started. Drive Tesla Canada says the warning began appearing late the week before its March 9 report.
