Starlink caps in-motion use at 100 mph on Roam and Priority

Starlink set a 100 mph (160 km/h) maximum for in-motion use on Roam, Local Priority and Global Priority plans, effective March 3, 2026 per Sporty's. Faster use, mainly aircraft, moved to new General Aviation plans.

Speed scale: road speeds for RVs well below 100 mph, the new 100 mph cap for Roam and Priority, General Aviation Local up to 300 mph and General Aviation Global up to 450 mph.

What changed

Starlink’s help page “Can I use Starlink in-motion?” now opens with:

“Starlink Roam, Local Priority, and Global Priority plans support in-motion use up to 100 mph (160 km/h) in authorized locations.”

Sporty’s Pilot Shop reported on March 5, 2026 that the limit took effect on March 3, 2026. Starlink’s page adds that “as of March 2026,” it offers new General Aviation plans for faster use: General Aviation Local for aircraft up to 300 mph and General Aviation Global up to 450 mph, each with 50GB a month and identity checks.

Before, Roam’s marketing said “up to 100 mph,” but faster use wasn’t blocked. RV Mobile Internet reported that the effective limit had been 450 mph, and that pilots were the ones using it. Now the app shows a message and limits service above the cap.

Who is affected

  • Pilots flying with a Roam or Priority plan. This change was aimed at them. Sporty’s notes 100 mph is “below the cruise speed of a lot of GA airplanes.”
  • RVers, van-lifers, truckers and boaters: almost nobody. No legal road speed in the US reaches 100 mph, and recreational boats rarely do.

What it means for you

If you drive an RV, nothing changes in practice. But the rule matters in two ways:

  1. The “moving too fast” message. If you ever see it on the road, the speed cap is not the usual cause. More often it’s the wrong plan, or Standby Mode, which isn’t meant for in-motion use. Our in-motion messages page walks through the causes.
  2. “Authorized locations.” The 100 mph rule applies only where in-motion use is allowed. Starlink lists countries where in-motion use on land is prohibited, including Mexico. Inside the US, in-motion use is allowed.

Also from Starlink’s page: dishes with motors (actuated models) are not recommended for in-motion use because of safety risks. That matters more to RVers than the speed cap. Our driving guide covers which dishes and mounts are meant for use while moving, and our overlanding and trucks guide covers rough-road mounting.

Safety first: never set up, aim or adjust a dish while driving.

What stays the same

  • Every Roam plan (100GB, 300GB, Unlimited) still allows in-motion use on land, inland waterways and territorial waters.
  • Residential plans still don’t allow in-motion use.
  • Prices of Roam plans were not part of this change.

How we handled this report

The rule itself is on starlink.com. The start date comes from Sporty’s, and we note the March 1 versus March 3 conflict in our changelog. We don’t print aviation plan prices because the press reports disagree.

Today’s values (from our checked data, not from the date above): 100 mph (checked Oct 5, 2026) · every Roam plan (100GB, 300GB, Unlimited) allows in-motion use, including inland waterways and territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles out (checked Oct 5, 2026) · “MOVING TOO FAST”: Starlink has detected it is moving too fast for your plan; slow below your plan’s limit, or on Residential go back to your service address (checked Oct 5, 2026).

What we don’t know yet

  • The exact start day. Sporty's says March 3, 2026; a forum thread said March 1; AOPA and others said only 'March 2026'.
  • Aviation plan prices. Sources disagree (Sporty's: $200 and $1,000 a month with 50GB; RV Mobile Internet: $250 and $1,000 with 20GB). Starlink's page lists 50GB but no price, so we don't print one as fact.
