“Moving too fast” or “disabled while moving”: what it means and what to check

Quick answer

It means your plan doesn’t allow use at the speed you’re moving. On Roam the limit is 100 mph; on Residential and in Standby Mode, any movement counts. At road speed, the usual cause is the plan, not your speed.

The two alerts, in Starlink’s words

MOVING TOO FAST

“MOVING TOO FAST”: Starlink has detected it is moving too fast for your plan; slow below your plan’s limit, or on Residential go back to your service address.

DISABLED WHILE MOVING

“DISABLED WHILE MOVING”: your plan only allows service while the dish is stationary; in-motion needs Roam.

What to check, in order

  1. Which plan is the line on? In the app, open Subscription. Residential can’t be used while moving at all.
  2. Is it paused? Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use. If you paused between trips, resume a Roam plan.
  3. Where are you? In Mexico and some other countries, in-motion on land is prohibited. And if you’ve been abroad too long, a different alert shows: “ROAMING PERIOD EXPIRED”: the dish has been outside its registered country too long.
  4. How fast? On Roam, over 100 mph is over the limit. That’s rare on the road.
  5. Can the dish find its location? A “determining location” alert, or a metal mount wrapped around the dish, can confuse it: third-party metal mounts that wrap around the dish’s base, or setting it directly on metal, can hurt GPS and are not supported.

Fixes

  • On Residential and need it on the road: you need a Roam plan. Roam plans start at $55/mo. Changing the Residential line’s plan has consequences at home; read Roam vs Residential first.
  • On Standby: resume service on a Roam plan before you drive. Resuming charges the month right away, prorated.
  • In Mexico: use it parked only.

Questions people ask

I’m on Roam and driving at 65 mph. Why does it say moving too fast?

Check that the line is really on a Roam plan and not paused in Standby (the app shows the plan under Subscription). If it is active Roam and you’re under the limit, contact Starlink support from the app; that isn’t the expected behavior.

Can I keep Standby on and still get messages while driving?

No. Starlink says Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use, and owners have reported the “disabled while moving” alert when driving on Standby since early 2026 (report). Resume a Roam plan if you need it on the road.

Will it come back when I stop?

For “disabled while moving”, yes: Starlink’s rule is about the dish being stationary. For Residential away from its address, it won’t; Residential only works at its registered address.
