Can you use Starlink while driving?

Quick answer

Yes, on every Roam plan in the US, up to 100 mph, with a dish rated for motion and bolted to the vehicle. Not on Residential, and not in Standby Mode. The driver never touches it while moving.

The speed limit only bites for aircraft in practice; it’s there because Starlink sells separate aviation plans. If your app says “moving too fast” at road speed, the plan is usually the problem: see what the message means.

Which dishes are supported while moving

Starlink lists Performance (Gen 3 and Gen 2), Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Mini; actuated (motorized) dishes are not recommended. The current Standard kit sold with Roam (Standard 4 X) and the Mini are both on that list. Older motorized dishes that tilt themselves are the ones to avoid: motorized dishes can cause injury or damage, or void the warranty, if used while moving.

Mounting for motion

  • A mount made for vehicles, such as Starlink’s Mobility Mount, which holds the dish at a fixed 8 ° tilt. The kickstand is for parked use only.
  • A solid surface. Starlink recommends at least 1.5 in of mounting surface for the Standard Mobility Mount and 1 in for the Mini’s. Thin RV roof skin alone isn’t that; you bolt into framing or a backing plate.
  • Thread locker on every fastener. Starlink says to use removable thread locker (such as Loctite 222) on all mount fasteners so they don’t shake loose.
  • No metal wrapped around the dish. Starlink says third-party metal mounts that wrap around the dish’s base, or setting it directly on metal, can hurt GPS and are not supported.
  • Seal every hole with a sealant made for your roof material. See roof mounts and cable entry.

Safety

  • Set up, aim and check everything before you drive. Never adjust gear, read the app or join a video call while driving.
  • Check the mount at every fuel stop on the first few trips.
  • Passengers can use it. The driver drives.

Questions people ask

Does Starlink work while driving?

Yes, on any Roam plan in the US, with a dish model Starlink supports for motion, fixed to the vehicle. It doesn’t work in motion on a Residential plan or in Standby Mode.

Is it legal to use Starlink while driving?

Using internet in a moving vehicle is allowed in the US; the United States is on Starlink’s list of approved in-motion markets. What isn’t legal or safe is the driver handling a phone, laptop or the dish while driving. Passengers can browse; the driver drives. State distracted-driving laws apply.

Can I drive with the dish on its kickstand on the roof or dash?

No. A loose dish can fly off and hurt someone. For use while moving, the dish has to be fixed in a mount made for motion and bolted to a solid surface. Starlink recommends a professional if you’re unsure.

Does it work while towing a trailer?

The plan rules are the same. The question is where the dish is: mounted on the trailer roof, the cable has to reach the router in the trailer, and nobody should be riding in a towed trailer. In practice, travel-trailer owners use it in the tow vehicle (a Mini on a truck mount) or only when parked.
