Which plan

Overlanders who stay in the US and Canada pick by data like anyone else. Long-haul drivers who stream in the sleeper most nights usually need 300GB or Unlimited. Anyone heading south of the border needs Unlimited ($175/mo).

Mounting on a truck

  • Bed rack or roof rack with Starlink’s Roof Rack Mount: the Standard Roof Rack Mount fits rack bars 15–44.5 mm thick and up to 95 mm wide, or compatible T-slots.
  • Truck camper roof: same rules as an RV roof. Roof mounts.
  • Supported dishes for motion: Performance (Gen 3 and Gen 2), Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Mini; actuated (motorized) dishes are not recommended.

Rough roads and weather

  • use removable thread locker (such as Loctite 222) on all mount fasteners so they don’t shake loose.
  • Check the mount after washboard, rock crawling or a long highway day.
  • Dust and rain: the dishes are rated IP67 (the Mini only with its DC cable and Starlink plug installed), and operational in wind of 60 mph. Low branches on trails are a bigger risk than weather.

Crossing borders

Canada is home region for US accounts. Mexico needs Roam Unlimited: 30 days, and in-motion use on land is prohibited in Mexico (boats only there). International rules.

Questions people ask

Can truckers use Starlink in the cab while driving?

The plan allows use while moving on Roam. But the driver can’t safely use it, and commercial drivers must follow FMCSA rules on phone and device use. In practice it’s for rest breaks and the sleeper berth.

Is Starlink Roam allowed for business use in a truck?

Roam is a consumer plan. Starlink sells separate business land-mobility plans; if the truck belongs to a company, check which plan fits its terms.

Will washboard roads shake the mount loose?

Vibration is the enemy of any fastener. Starlink’s own guidance is to use removable thread locker on every mount fastener. Check the mount after every rough stretch.
