Peplink firmware 8.6: SpeedFusion Boost and new Starlink health checks
Peplink's firmware 8.6.0, released July 29, 2026, adds SpeedFusion Boost for bonding mixed links like Starlink and 5G, native OneWeb support, Starlink status in the WAN details, and Starlink health checks that ping 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 by default.

What changed
Peplink published firmware 8.6.0 for its routers with a release date of July 29, 2026. For RVers who run Starlink next to a cellular modem, the release notes list these changes:
- SpeedFusion Boost, a new bonding method that Peplink says improves application performance over SpeedFusion connections “using Starlink, 5G, and other suitable WAN links”.
- Starlink status information added to the WAN details screen.
- Starlink WAN health checks changed to use 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 when no health-check host is set, or when the router is told to use its DNS servers as ping hosts.
- OneWeb integration support, next to the existing Starlink support. RV Mobile Internet reports this lives in a new “Orbit WAN” control panel.
- WireGuard added as a remote user access VPN option.
RV Mobile Internet, reporting the same day, said several older models won’t get 8.6, including the MAX 700, MAX BR1 ENT, MAX HD2, MAX HD4 and MAX Transit variants.
Who is affected
- RVers with a Peplink router doing failover or bonding between Starlink and cellular.
- People who have seen false failovers. RV Mobile Internet says the health-check change is meant to use more stable targets, so the router is less likely to drop a working Starlink link.
What it means for you
The health-check change lines up with what Starlink itself suggests for third-party routers: ping a public IP such as 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1. Our failover guide explains those checks and how long a switch takes.
If you update, do it at home or at a campsite with a working connection, not on a travel day. Then pull the cellular modem or cover the dish for a minute to confirm failover still works. Our cellular-first setup shows the wiring, and the router guide covers other router brands.
What stays the same
- Nothing about Starlink plans, prices or data allowances changes with router firmware.
- Bonding and failover don’t create extra data: every GB that goes over Starlink still counts against a capped Roam plan.
How we handled this
The feature list and date come from Peplink’s own release notes. The model exclusions come from the press report. We have no business relationship with Peplink and have not tested this firmware.

What we don’t know yet
- How much SpeedFusion Boost helps on a real RV mix of Starlink and cellular. Peplink describes the goal; we have not seen independent tests.
- Whether SpeedFusion Boost needs a paid SpeedFusion subscription on your model. Check your router's license before you count on it.
- Exactly which models get every feature. The release notes list devices per feature, and the RV Mobile Internet report says several older MAX models won't get 8.6 at all.
