Between trips: pause or cancel?
Pause with Standby Mode
$10/mo
- Slow connection (up to 500 kbps) for messages and the app.
- Resume any time; resuming charges the monthly fee right away, prorated.
- Not for use while moving.
- pausing more than 12 months in a row may bring a fee or a required plan change.
Cancel the plan
$0
- No connection at all until you start a plan again.
- You keep the kit.
- Pick the plan you need for the next trip when you restart.
Cellular hotspot plans, for comparison
| Plan | Monthly | Data | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile AWAY 200GB | $110 | 200GB, then slowed (reported max 128 Kbps) | With AutoPay. 5G gateway included; can be used in motion; pause reported at $10/mo. Official t-mobile.com pages blocked automated fetch; prices from secondary review and search snippet of t-mobile.com. |
| T-Mobile AWAY Unlimited | $160 | Unlimited (may be slowed in congestion; further reduced >1.2TB/mo per t-mobile.com snippet) | With AutoPay; gateway included. |
| Verizon Pro hotspot | $90 | 100GB premium hotspot data | $90 first line standalone ($60 additional); $40/mo if added to an existing Verizon Unlimited phone line. Premium 150GB: $110 standalone / $60 add-on. Taxes and fees extra. CONFLICT: a 2026 search snippet (secondary) said Pro is $60 add-on/$90 standalone and Essential 15GB is $20; the official page fetched 2026-10-05 shows Pro $40 add-on and Essential $10 add-on. Use official. |
| Verizon Pro hotspot (added to a Verizon Unlimited phone line) | $40 | 100GB premium hotspot data | Only if you already have a Verizon Unlimited phone line; standalone it’s $90. Taxes and fees extra. |
| AT&T DataConnect 50GB | $55 | 50GB | With AutoPay and paperless billing; taxes and fees extra. From the same AT&T page as the 100GB plan. |
| AT&T DataConnect 100GB | $90 | 100GB; $10 per extra 5GB | Price with AutoPay and paperless billing (discount starts within 2 bills); taxes/fees extra. DataConnect 50GB is $55. Secondary source says without AutoPay $65 (50GB) / $100 (100GB). |
| Visible Visible+ Pro | $45 | Unlimited phone data; unlimited hotspot capped at 15 Mbps | Phone plan, not a dedicated hotspot. $40/mo with code 5OFF5 for 5 years; annual $450/yr. Taxes and fees included. Base Visible $25 (hotspot 5 Mbps), Visible+ $35 (10 Mbps). |
Cellular needs no kit or mount and works while driving, but only where there’s signal. Many RVers keep both: routers that switch between them.
Who shouldn’t get Starlink for travel
- Your trips are short and your routes have good cell signal. A cellular hotspot plan is cheaper and simpler. The picker checks this first.
- You camp mostly under heavy trees and won’t carry a pole. Expect drops. Read campgrounds with trees.
- The plan you’d need doesn’t fit your budget. Cancel between trips, pick a smaller allowance, or go cellular only. The cost page shows each pattern.
- You need guaranteed service while driving, for safety or work. Read the in-motion rules first, and never set up or adjust gear while driving.
- You live outside the US. This site covers US accounts and US prices only.
Questions people ask
How much does Starlink cost for an RV per month?
As of Oct 5, 2026: Roam 100GB is $55, Roam 300GB $80 and Roam Unlimited $175 a month, before tax. The kit is a one-time cost: $349 for the Standard or $149 for the Mini on starlink.com.
Is it cheaper to pause or cancel between trips?
Cancelling costs nothing between trips; pausing with Standby Mode is reported at $10 a month (Starlink’s page only says “a small monthly fee”). Pausing keeps a slow connection for messages and keeps the line ready to resume from the app.
Are there hidden fees?
Taxes, and shipping on the kit, show at checkout. Ocean Mode on Roam Unlimited is billed per GB if you turn it on. There’s no overage bill on Roam 100GB or 300GB: service just slows down after the allowance.
