Ocean Mode now $6 per GB on Roam Unlimited
Starlink's Ocean Mode help page says Roam Unlimited users pay $6 per GB for Ocean Mode starting September 27, 2026, up from $2. Every GB counts while it's switched on, on land as well as at sea.

What changed
Starlink’s help page “What is Ocean Mode?” carries an update line dated August 27, 2026, and lists Ocean Mode pricing by plan:
“Roam Unlimited: $2 USD per GB, then $6 USD per GB starting September 27, 2026”
So from September 27, 2026, Ocean Mode on Roam Unlimited costs three times what it did. The same page lists the new Personal Maritime plan at $6 per GB from the start. RV Mobile Internet first reported the increase on August 28, 2026, alongside the new maritime plan.
Ocean Mode is the paid add-on that lets a Roam Unlimited dish work beyond 12 nautical miles from shore. It also lifts the coastal limit on Roam (normally 5 days in a row and 60 days a year in territorial waters) and gives your data higher priority than standard Roam data.
Who is affected
- Offshore boaters on Roam Unlimited: crossings, passages, and fishing trips past 12 nautical miles.
- Coastal cruisers who leave Ocean Mode on to avoid the 5-day/60-day territorial-water limit.
- Land travelers who switched it on for priority: the page says you can enable it on land, and it bills per GB there too.
- Not affected: Roam 100GB and 300GB users (Ocean Mode is a Roam Unlimited option), and anyone who never turns it on.
What it means for you
The biggest risk is forgetting it’s on. Starlink’s page says Ocean Mode “remains enabled until you manually toggle it off” and billing starts the moment you enable it. At $6 per GB, a single evening of streaming can cost real money.
A rough example using only the two published rates: 20 GB of use with Ocean Mode on cost $40 at $2 per GB. At $6 per GB, the same 20 GB costs $120.
What to do now:
- Turn Ocean Mode off as soon as you’re back inside 12 nautical miles and don’t need it for the coastal-day limit. In the app it’s under Data Usage; on the web, under Subscriptions.
- Cut data while offshore. Pause phone backups and app updates and drop video quality. Our data use guide shows what each activity uses per hour.
- Compare plans if you’re offshore often. Starlink now offers a Personal Maritime plan for small boats, also at $6 per GB for ocean data but with unlimited use in territorial waters worldwide. Our boats guide and Roam Unlimited page explain which fits which kind of boating.
What stays the same
- Roam Unlimited’s monthly price and its unlimited data on land don’t change.
- You still need Ocean Mode, or a maritime or Global Priority plan, to connect beyond 12 nautical miles.
- Inland lakes, rivers and marinas are covered by Roam plans without Ocean Mode, as before.
How we handled this report
This is a starlink.com rate, so it counts as a primary source. We first posted it as a short note on the day it took effect and expanded it into this article on October 6, 2026 after re-reading the page.

What we don’t know yet
- Whether Starlink will add a cap or alert for Ocean Mode spending. The page says only that usage appears on your next invoice.
- Whether the $6 rate will change again. Starlink's page gives no guarantee either way.
- The page's own 'modified' date looks unreliable, so we date this from the rate it states and the day we read it.
