Starlink RV setup checklist

Quick answer

Do the account and app setup at home, then at each site: find open sky, set the dish down or on its mount, run the cable, power it, and run the app’s obstruction check. Starlink wants an unobstructed 360° view of the sky from 20° above the horizon up.

Before the first trip (at home)

  • Activate the kit and the plan at home, with good internet, and update the Starlink app.
  • Set it up once in your driveway: learn the kickstand, the cable and the router.
  • Plan where the cable enters the rig (five ways) and where the router lives.
  • Check your power: the Standard averages 75–100 W average, the Mini 25–40 W average.
  • Note your billing date: plan changes and pauses line up with it.

At every campsite

  1. Look up before you level. If you can choose, pick the site with the most open sky. Trees to one side are fine if they’re low.
  2. Place the dish on its kickstand on the ground, or on your pole or ladder mount. Not on a metal surface: third-party metal mounts that wrap around the dish’s base, or setting it directly on metal, can hurt GPS and are not supported.
  3. Run the cable to the router without pinching it in a door or slide-out.
  4. Power up and give it a few minutes to find its location and satellites.
  5. Run the obstruction check in the app and move the dish if it shows blocked sky.
  6. Secure it against wind and curious dogs. Both dishes are rated to 60 mph operational, but a kickstand on loose ground can tip.
The clear-sky coneFrom the dish, two lines rise at 20 degrees above the horizon on each side. Everything above those lines must be open sky. A tree inside the cone blocks it; a tree outside the cone does not.Blocks the viewBelow the line: finedishopen sky needed above 20°
Anything that pokes above the 20° line, in any direction, will cause short drops as satellites pass behind it. Low trees well away from the dish don’t matter. Drawing not to scale.

Power

  • On shore power: use the supplied power supply.
  • Off-grid: the Mini takes 12–48 V DC input, so it can run from a 12 V RV system without an inverter. For the Standard, a separate Standard DC-DC power supply takes 12–48 V DC in, sold in select markets, or an inverter.
  • Battery sizing and solar are covered by our sister site, Starlink Mini USA.

Packing up

  • Unplug at the dish end first and cap the connector if you have a cap.
  • Coil the cable loosely; tight coils and kinks damage it.
  • Pause or cancel between trips, if that’s your plan: pause or cancel. Paused service is not meant for use while moving.

Questions people ask

How do I set up Starlink at a campsite?

Find the most open patch of sky, set the dish on its kickstand or mount, run the cable to the router, power it up, and use the obstruction check in the Starlink app. Move it if the check shows blocked sky. The whole thing takes a few minutes once you know the routine.

Can I run Starlink on 12V without an inverter?

The Mini takes 12–48 V DC directly. The Standard needs Starlink’s separate DC-DC power supply (sold in select markets) or an inverter. Power and battery sizing are covered on our sister site.

Do I need to point it?

Both current kits are “software-assisted manual orienting”: the app tells you how to angle it. You don’t aim it at a satellite yourself.
